If I could give one piece of advice to young poets and writers, itโ€™d be this

Write about joy.

Many artists have a tendency to fetishize negativity, because conflict is interesting and it makes for good stories.

But the happy stories deserve to be told too. Donโ€™t neglect them.

Become as curious about the things that make you feel good as you are about the things that bring you pain.

Often, the writers who quit are the ones who *had* to quitโ€”because they believed that good art centers around their pain, and so, making art became incompatible with their will to live.

Take your vitamins. Drink more water. Fall in love. Relax. Laugh. Celebrate. And write about it.

When all thatโ€™s left of you is your journals, let the record of your life show that you felt everythingโ€”the good, bad, beautiful, and ugly.

Even if there was pain, let it be known that there was balance too. You didnโ€™t let yourself become numb or hollow.

You lived, and you were whole.

And whatever demons you mightโ€™ve had, you refused to let them win.
