Say the word “love” a little less often than you think it, until he’s gotten used to the sound of it. 

Rise when you’re happy to rise, even when your vampiric lover scowls at the onslaught of early summer light. 

If you’re the vampiric lover, sleep in. Let your star be a star and embrace you with warmth when you’re ready. 

Laugh, and share your laughter. 

Don’t let the coals die out—but continue to spark the flint every once in a while, just to show you haven’t forgotten. 

Err on the side of patience and autonomy.

Make the bed together, every morning. Share the dishes, clear the trash, and brush your teeth. 

Don’t withhold kisses just because you’re in the grocery store, or an elevator, or the waiting room of your doctor’s office. 

Acquiesce, sometimes. 

Risk rejection—and if you must reject, do it in such a way that preserves the other’s dignity. 

Imagine your life without them. 

When you hug, sway gently from side to side, until the hug becomes a dance. 

Don’t argue as viciously as you practiced in your head. 

Take warm baths, with or without them. 

Remember that the greener grasses don’t exist unless you water them. 

Water them.
