3 (a study)

Three vertical wisps of smoke
On the eastern mountain range

The midnight washerwomen
At the water’s edge

One kiss on the left cheek
Two on the right

Mom’s last-straw voice
Don’t make me count to—

Moon, huntress, underworld

The Maries who
carried, grieved, and followed

Undone to-do’s
Competing with each other

Death, birth, and beauty

Crossroad lovers
who might have been

Days and nights passed
No trace, no news
