Edelweiss

it's the lonely peaks for me
the points I return to
when I'm muscled back
into the foxhole of myself
the lonely peaks
and the fine pure air
and the backsplash of sunshine
shielding me from tomorrow
i wish i knew for sure
which birds are flightless birds
when sweet disguises poison
who'll be waiting for me
when I stumble home
bereft of all but knowing better
but for now
these right-here moments
will have to do
set to endure like a solitaire gem
and for everything else
there's the lonely peaks
and the path i pave myself
by putting one stubborn foot
in front of the other
